Evangelistic Praise House of Jesus Christ: A Legacy of Faith and Service
On December 9, 2005, Julia Porter Maddox was consecrated, confirmed, and ordained into gospel ministry by a board of esteemed religious leaders from Chicago, Kansas City, and Virginia. This independent, ecumenical gathering of pastors and spiritual mentors prayed over and affirmed Julia’s calling. Her father, the late Rev. Dr. Kwame John R. Porter, guided her through a transformative year of study and mentorship, nurturing her vision for ministry.
Under divine guidance, Julia and her father worked together to train deacons and prepare for the ministry’s official launch. The ordination service for the Evangelistic Praise House of Jesus Christ, also known as God’s Celebration Station, became a pivotal moment, uniting loved ones and community members despite challenging weather conditions. The late Wille Tamplin Barrow, Pastor Leslie Sanders, Dr. Tracy Smith Malone, Dr. Larry Turpin, and Pastor Ray Lagania, among others, joined to witness this powerful move of God. Pastor Willa Tramble delivered a stirring sermon, supported by her husband, who offered words of encouragement as Julia’s ministry journey began.
For the past 19 years, Evangelistic Praise House has served as a beacon of hope and faith in Chicago, establishing a reputation for impactful ministry and strong community ties. The Praise House shared worship and Bible study space in seven different locations, finally purchasing a permanent home at 120 E. 87th Street in March 2018. This property, purchased debt-free, became a true sanctuary for the congregation. During the pandemic, the church completed Phase I of renovations, transforming the space into a welcoming, revitalized sanctuary—To God be the Glory!
The church’s commitment to evangelism and spiritual growth has led to many successful ministry efforts. One of the most enduring of these is the daily prayer line, now over 12 years old, which has become a spiritual anchor for the congregation. Evangelistic Praise House also emphasizes education and wellness; 85% of members have earned college degrees or pursued higher education, and the church actively promotes health-conscious choices through its wellness ministry. Wellness Advocates within the congregation provide support and resources to encourage healthy living.
Pastor Julie’s impactful sermons have inspired and challenged the congregation, with messages such as “Don’t Let Your Condition Condition You,” “Can We Talk?,” “Helpful Hints,” and “Don’t Box Me In.” These sermons reflect the church’s belief in practical, uplifting messages that resonate with all aspects of life.
Looking forward, Evangelistic Praise House is preparing to expand its outreach through elder care initiatives, mentorship, and mental health programs, seeking to serve the community’s most pressing needs. The church is open to partnerships, contacts, and funding proposals that will help advance these vital programs.
Though small in number, the members of Evangelistic Praise House are strong in faith, demonstrating that ministry done differently can be ministry done effectively. Rooted in a deep commitment to God and community, Evangelistic Praise House of Jesus Christ continues to thrive as a unique and vibrant congregation—a true Celebration Station for God’s work in the world.
